The fundamental notion of preparing a book in English to honor Martynas

Maþvydas with articles by prominent specialists in their respective fields is good,

but the execution has been seriously flawed by an English style reminiscent of the

heavy-handed and unidiomatic English of Soviet propaganda tracts. I consider

myself an average relatively literate native speaker of American English and as such

I found this book extremely difficult to read and understand. I fear that other native

speakers of English will find the book equally burdensome. I think it possible,

however, that the book would not be so burdensome for non-native speakers of

American English, native speakers of languages like German and East European

languages, which tolerate complex participial constructions which frequently

sound very awkward in literal translation into modern American colloquial Eng-

lish. The grammar is for the most part correct, but for the native speaker of American

English the style is conducive to sleep. Since so much effort was expended on the

preparation of this volume, it would have been worth the effort to find a good

translator, such as, e.g., Ramutë Plioplytë of Chicago, who prepared an excellent

English translation of Zigmas Zinkevièius History of the Lithuanian Language

Milda Bakðytë-Richardson of Boston who prepared a good English translation of

Algirdas Sabaliauskas We, the Balts

. Another example of an excellent idiomatic

English translation is that of the Newberry Lituanica

by Jurgis Arvydas Anysas and

Laima Petrauskas VanderStoep. In Lithuania now in addition to such native spea-

kers of English as Lina and Tadas Klimas, there are also Lithuanians with a perfect

command of English, such as Alfonsas Lauèka, Lionginas Paþûsis, Albertas Stepo-

navièius, (and probably many others whom I dont know) who could have corrected

the English of this publication. Thus there do exist persons who can prepare good

contemporary idiomatic English translations from Lithuanian.

For the untutored American it would also have been useful to prepare an index

giving the Lithuanian, Polish and Latin forms of the various names encountered in

the different articles. For example the name Maciej Stryjkowski appears on pp.270-

271 (as Strykowski on p.280) whereas in the title of one of the articles we read

Motiejus Strijkovskis. On p.227 we find Mikalojus Radvila the Black whereas on

p.393 we encounter Nicolaus Radvilus the Black. Similarly one might wonder why

the title mentioned by Domas Kaunas as Giesmë ð. Ambrazeijaus bei ð. Augustina The

Hymn of St. Ambrose and St. Augustine (p.237) is different from the title mentio-

ned by Jolita Liðkevièienë, Giesmës ðv. Ambraziejaus ir ðv. Augustino Hymns of

St.Ambrose and St. Augustine (p.403). Proper editing would have corrected and

unified these titles.
