The titles of some of the articles in the table of contents differ from the titles found

in the articles themselves. Sometimes this can be explained by the desire to have an

abbreviated title in the table of contents. Other times it seems quite capricious. For

example in the text (p.159) we encounter the title: The first book and its addressee

whereas in the table of contents (p.5) we read The first Lithuanian book and its

addressee. In the text we find: Texts and melodies of Latin hymns in Maþvydas

translation (p.343), whereas in the table of contents we read: The texts and

melodies of the Latin hymns translated by Maþvydas. In one case the meaning of

the table of contents title: The melodies of hymns in Martynas Maþvydas hymnal

(p.5) is rather different from the title on p.363: Hymn melodies in Martynas

Maþvydas books.

The book is nicely bound and has many excellent illustrations. It is too bad that

a book with potentially interesting articles by excellent scholars has been sloppily

edited and translated. Therefore one could not recommend this book to American

students interested in the Baltic countries. It would surely stifle any interest in the

Baltic that they might have had. In sum then, my evaluation of this book is mixed,

generally positive for the content, but negative for the manner of presentation.
